Piazza Angelo Scandaliato: una cartolina vivente

They call it the “living room of Sciacca”, and as soon as you arrive, it’s easy to see why. This spacious panoramic terrace overlooks the sea, offering breathtaking sunsets, leisurely strolls with no destination in mind, and the perfect spot to enjoy an aperitif at one of the cafés and bars that surround it.

This is the beating heart of the city. From here, you can begin exploring Sciacca: head down the long staircase to the charming fishing district, or wander through the narrow streets of the historic centre to discover the city’s most important landmarks, which I’ll tell you more about in the next articles.

Every time I come here, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to have a place like this on my doorstep. Even when I’m simply passing through in a hurry, it always manages to give me a moment of peace. Maybe it’s the ever-changing colours of the sky, the sunlight dancing on the sea, or simply the view that has a way of putting everything into perspective, if only for a moment.

This square holds so many memories from different stages of my life. I remember the little girl walking hand in hand with her grandparents, stopping at the market stalls in search of a small toy. Then there’s the teenager dancing during the Sciacca Carnival, the oldest carnival in Sicily, which I’ll tell you more about later. And today, there are my daughters, running from one side of the square to the other or strolling together hand in hand.

The square measures approximately 150 metres in length and 51 metres in width. It is dedicated to Lieutenant Colonel Angelo Scandaliato, who was born in Sciacca and became a courageous hero of the First World War.

What more can I say? If there’s one place to begin your visit to Sciacca, this is it. Take a few minutes, step onto this beautiful terrace overlooking the sea, and let your gaze drift towards the horizon.
